Eduard “The Landslide” Folayang just satisfied UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes’ requirement to be a true champion. The Filipino MMA hero claimed victory against a very intense foe in Kiwi-Malaysian Ev Ting in a five-round war of attrition at ONE: Kings of Destiny. Making the night sweeter is Lakay teammates Kevin Belingon, Honorio Banario, Danny Kingad, and Gina Iniong’s wins, leading to a 5-0 sweep for the mythical Baguio-based team.

We saw a familiar “Landslide” last night, unafraid to throw kicks and back fists against an opponent who similarly enjoys trading shots. “E.T.” was a bit gun shy at first, but things picked up within the round, eventually culminating in a five-round classic.

Eduard Folayang was bloodied by Round 3, but continued to pour it against Ev Ting for five rounds.

Folayang essentially relied on his striking and improved grappling to establish three layers of offense against the taller Ting. From the get go, he looked to keep his  distance with straight side, roundhouse, and spinning wheel kicks. In contrast to Ev’s headhunting tendencies, Folayang tried to play an endurance game with leg and body kicks that typically pay dividends at the latter rounds. They are also more efficient in terms of output: Head kicks take more energy to execute, more so against a taller opponent.

Interviewing Jeremy Miado almost feels like chatting with an amateur fighter. No, we’re not talking about the arrogance of someone who’s had a month of jiu-jitsu training and thinks he can take on anyone on the street. Jeremy is the polar opposite.

A native of Legazpi City, Albay, Miado has the humility of a neophyte putting on a pair of gloves for the first time. But obviously, he is far from that. Miado is, in fact, the current Blaze FC strawweight champion.

On April 21, in a card littered with ONE’s Filipino staples, he will have the chance to prove that he is fit for the big leagues as he steps inside the ONE Championship cage for the first time. His opponent is compatriot Robin Catalan of Catalan Fighting System.

Ahead of their championship clash at ONE: Kings of Destiny on April 21 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, ONE lightweight world champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang and No.1 contender Ev “ET” Ting met with members of the press to discuss their preparations for the fight.

While both fighters are respectful of their opponent during the media scrum, Ev Ting is known for getting to this position at the expense of four Filipino fighters. Will his role as the bane of Filipino fighters continue, or will “Landslide” put a stop to Ting’s streak and secure his first title defense with the whole nation behind him?
