URCC 28: Vindication Photos and Recap

De Tomas, Lee, Bulaong, and Hofmann continue in their winning ways

The Marriot Grand Ballroom once again became host to a historic Universal Reality Combat Championship (URCC) fight night on Sunday, November 6, 2016 which featured the Fight Farm Finale, four championship bouts and the first-ever 3-on-3 exhibition match in the Philippines.

Fight Farm Finale

Jiar “Twister” Castillo proved that he is the top flyweight prospect as he got the unanimous nod from the judges to become the inaugural Fight Farm flyweight champion. The storied one-eyed-fighter seemed sharp as he went toe-to-toe against KO machine, Norman Agcopra.

The reality show featured fighters from the Academy Fighting Championship (AFC) and was shown on ABS-CBN Sports+Action.

Middleweight Championship

Light heavyweight champion Chris Hofmann showed John “Outlaw” Adajar how moving down a division won’t mess with his knockout power. With only three weeks to prepare, Hofmann dropped down 19 lbs to meet the welterweight Adajar at 185 lbs.

Hofmann dropped Adajar with a flying knee which forced the challenger to verbally submit 1:18 of the second round.

Post-fight, the now two-division URCC champion expressed his desire to be on the URCC San Francisco card in January.

Women’s Flyweight Championship

Filipina fighter Geli Bulaong became the first URCC women’s flyweight champion as she dominated Yan Qui Hui of China.

Referee Franco Rulloda was forced to stop the fight after a ground and pound flurry from Bulaong held the Chinese Sanda veteran helpless in the final seconds of the first round.

Geli dedicated her win to her late aunt who she lost to cancer thus becoming her inspiration to pursue MMA and the healthy lifestyle. She also pledged to donate her winnings to the Cancer Society of the Philippines.

Featherweight Championship

After taking the belt from Red Romero in April, Korean “Kid Tornado” Do Gyeom Lee defended the URCC featherweight championship against Ryan Dela Cruz.

After suffering a cut on the forehead from a slicing elbow in the first round, the Korean pretty-boy rallied back with leg kicks as he traded punches with Dela Cruz.

Proving that he can last until the championship rounds, Do Gyeom Lee was awarded the unanimous decision.

Flyweight Championship

In a true test of strength and skill, CJ “Goldenboy” De Tomas relied on his wrestling skills to defend his URCC flyweight belt against Alvin “Kastigo” Ramirez in their five-round championship match.

Early on, De Tomas’ game plan was to pin Ramirez to the ground and that he did well. Ramirez was able to deliver a nasty knee to open up De Tomas’ forehead in the first round, which made the champion stick to his grappling and wrestling throughout the fight.

Goldenboy was handed the UD victory and remains undefeated at 7-0. The youngest URCC champion said he got his strength from his wife who is expected to give birth next month.

3-on-3 Exhibition Match

Team Estroso (Sugar Ray Estroso, Patrick Dos Santos, Mark Palomar) emerged victorious over Team Chan (Arvin Chan, Iyoy Espinosa, Jhon Ray Larena) in their Russian-style 3v3 exhibition match.

Knocking out Patrick Dos Santos in the early minutes of the first round, Larena was caught off-guard by a spinning back fist from Palomar, turning the match into a 2v2 contest.

Team captains Estroso and Chan exchanged vicious blows coupled with some trash talking thoughout the fight. After Iyoy Espinosa got caught up between Palomar and Estroso in the second round, Arvin Chan decided to wave the white flag giving Team Estroso the victory.
