Despite immigration issues, Balikatan 15 proceeded with 15 amateur and pro-am fights
Goodwill games are held to promote camaraderie and exposure for fighters both local and foreign. That’s what Balikatan 15 brought to the Marikina Sports Center on an action-packed Sunday evening.
Hybrid Yaw-Yan and Balikatan host, Sir Henry Kobayashi, apologized in behalf of the 5 Indian pro-am fighters that were not able to show up due to immigration issues. Nonetheless, fight fans were treated to an action-packed night that featured a stacked amateur/pro-am card, 2 of which bannered the India vs. Philippines matches.
Fredelyn Sayod of Hybrid Yaw-Yan won over Budo Kai Do’s Harpeet Kaur to score the Philippine’s only victory over India that night. Kaur’s straight punches and takedowns weren’t enough to rock Sayod, who displayed dominance with her ground and pound for most of the match.
The other India vs. Philippines bout featured Abhinay Dadwal vs. Christopher Peña. Dadwal’s explosive Budo Kai Do prowess worked to his favor as he scored big with his striking and ground game, earning him a unanimous victory over the Yaw-Yan Kampilan fighter.
Meanwhile, Samson College MMA’s Jomar Pal-iwen continues his knockout streak as he puts Christopher San Agustin to the mat. Known for his boxing and striking, Pal-iwen’s right hook KO gained him Knockout of the Night.
The future of Pinoy MMA was also at full swing as young guns Harvey Miguel Villena (14) and Ricardo Jose Martinez (19) fought in a Teen MMA format and did not disappoint. Villena’s striking showed much of his Yaw-Yan training but unfortunately got tagged with a straight right by Martinez late in the second round.
With more amateur fighters showing interest in Balikatan, the 16th installment of the amateur/pro-am league is scheduled in July. Interested fighters may now sign-up at the Hybrid Yaw-Yan Gym in Cubao and look for Sir Henry Kobayashi.
